China's The North

The North

This is the historical heartland of China; the land where civilization first blossomed and the mighty Huanghe River supported its people. This is China’s protective cradle, a soil painted yellow dying the river with which they mythically associate themselves, and a world unequivocally Han in custom and folklore.

While their southern neighbors have traditionally viewed those to the north as unsophisticated, simple and honest, their remains a deep respect for the people of North China and the historical legitimacy of the region as a whole. And, although the North may fall behind in the country’s overall rush to economic supremacy, it is from this region that Chinese traditions flow in epic proportions.

Discover the unassuming Shangdong, where the Yellow River leaves China for the Bo Hai Sea and also sports Qingdao, one of China’s unparalleled port cities, as well as the host of the 2008 Olympic Sailing events. Or, explore the speckling of sacred monuments that dot this region, where temples cluster around the imperial resort of Chengde and Buddhist carvings reign supreme at Longmen and Yungang. Above all, set aside fair time to witness the majesty of one of China’s most famed sites, the Terracotta Warriors, assembled outside Xi’an.
