India's Central India
Fatehpur Sikri
Within this fortified ghost city retains the powerful air of its glory days when it served as the magnificent capital of the dominating Mughal empire. While brilliant and unusual in its architectural construction, Fethpur Sikri was left abandoned shortly after the death of its mastermind, Emperor Akbar, due to its less than hospitable location often burdened with water shortages.
The city remains an exquisitely preserved showcase of breathtaking palaces and mosques, and stands proudly as a World Heritage Site. Clustered along a series of terraces, the principle buildings of the Imperial Palace shine most vibrantly in the setting Indian sun, while the spiritual reverence of the city resonates proudly at any hour of the day.
