Mark Twain once told of Varanasi writing that it was, “older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together.” True, Varanasi rings with an antique allure, as it has served as a center of learning and civilization for more than 2000 years; however, its reverence in the hearts of Hindu pilgrims still resonates as powerfully as ever.
The city of Shiva, and its infamous Ganges River, is one of the holiest cities in India. Its waters draw pilgrims from across the globe for a chance to cleanse their sins along these sacred banks, and serves as a powerful crossing place between the physical and spiritual worlds. While the river proves a compelling highlight of this ancient city, a rich array of sights remains along its banks.
