Ajanta
At the Buddhist caves of Ajanta discover a stunning series of carvings hewn from rock on a massive scale. While more than 2000 years in age, the remarkably well preserved walls of the underground fortresses display vivid frescoes and exquisite carvings of stupas and the reclining Buddha.
Believed to have been built between 200 BC and 650 AD, Ajanta earns its honored title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the caves at Ajanta present a world of wonders, the most breathtaking have to be the Murals lining the walls. Believed to have been executed between the 2nd century BC and the 5th century AD, these murals prove some of the finest examples of Buddhist painting in the world.
