Indonesia's Komodo Island
Komodo Island
Sandwiched between Flores and Sumbawa, find the breathtaking home of one of the world’s largest reptiles…the Komodo dragon. Known locally as the ora, this massive lizard, the largest in the world at more than 3m in length, proudly traverses the hilly shores of this Indonesian island.
Komodo Island itself is desolate, yet exquisite. The waters surrounding it are some of the most volatile in the world. Fraught by whirlpools and riptides these waters prove most fitting for these reptilian mammoths and their intriguing setting.
Living amidst this last remaining dinosaur, find the herds of wild hogs and water buffalo that serve as its prey, as well as the bats and snakes that populate the desolate cliffs of the island and the 15 cm long Nephilia spider, whose yellow plastic like webs stretch more than six meters across walking tracks. While Komodo Island is the largest undisturbed Komodo habitat, neighboring Rinca offers a Komodo experience all its own.
