Thailand's Bangkok

The Wats

It would be impossible to visit Thailand and not visit at least several of the country’s renowned Wats that speckle the land. Each is unique as well as inspiring, and behind every Wat lies a different story. From the Erawan Shrine, built to appease the forces taking the lives of the workers building the Grand Hyatt Erawan, to the infamous Wat Arun, or Temple of Dawn, rising majestically from the banks of the Chao Praya, each Wat inspires a different color in the imagination.

Not to be missed is Wat Po, otherwise known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. This is the oldest and largest Buddhist temple in Bangkok, dating to the 16th century. Divided by Chetuphon Road, the northern area holds the Wats important monuments, while the southern portion is home to the residing monks. To participate in the great Buddhist culture of Thailand, visit Wat Mahathat, headquarters to the country’s largest monastic order, and home of the Center for Vipassana Meditation at Buddhist University.
