Vietnam's Mekong Delta
Mekong Delta
A timeless setting of patch-worked rice paddies broken by narrow dikes, this agricultural belt known as the Mekong Delta offers breathtaking vistas of arroyos lined with bamboo, coconut and Nipa palms, and checkerboard scenes speckled with the silhouettes of conical-hatted workers and peaceful water buffalo.
The people of the Mekong Delta wear a stereotype of warm and personable character, and are long adapted to life on the river, where their labors revolve around the cycles of the river. Formed by the sediment deposited by the river, the Delta is a fertile landscape responsible for the production of the entire country’s rice supply in addition to an impressive surplus. Connected by a complex network of canals and estuaries, the Delta is a setting marked by numerous fishing boats, houseboats, car ferries and vendor boats, however, to find the typical land vehicle traversing the Mekong is a rare sight indeed.
Visit the breathtaking bonsai gardens, wander through the quaint riverside towns, sample ripe fruits bartered at the local floating markets of Cai Rang or Phun Hiep, or dine on home cooked delicacies before over-nighting as a home-stay guest. This is quintessential Vietnam in all its glory, encapsulated within the unique beauty of this southern region.
