Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, is perched on the windswept southwest tip of the island. This small but cosmopolitan city has charming gabled cottages, impressive Gothic architecture and some of the country’s best restaurants. Stroll along the seaside promenade for sweeping views of the bay. To the north are massive ranges of hills, to the west, long stretches of beaches and sand dunes. In the south find low-lying coastal land and to the east see New Zealand’s first sheep stations.
