Chiang Mai, Thailand
Journey outside the city and enjoy a visit to the hill-tribe villages at Baan Tong Luang.
Upon arrival, you will have the opportunity to visit the Karen, Lahu Shibala, & Palong Hill-tribes, which originated from Tibet. Additionally, a special visit will be made to one of the Long-neck hill tribes.
"Lahu" means "hunter" and the Lahu (Mussur) pride themselves on their skills in hunting and trapping. They are also famous for their knowledge of herbal medicine. The Lahu are an independent people, physically larger than the members of the other tribes, but rather than their greater stature leading to aggressiveness, they love entertainment and the easy life.
Attractions of a Palong Village are the women who wear waisthoops. This practice is believed to uphold legendary mysteries.
In Long-neck hill tribes, certain females 'elongate' their necks from an early age with brass, which is coiled around their necks to give a brass ring effect. The greater number of coils is believed to enhance physical beauty and increase aesthetic appeal. Wearing the coiled brass rings is considered an "honor" and is a privilege awarded to females who are born on a full moon.
