Enjoy a ferry ride to Elephanta Island, ‘The City of Caves’.
The obscure origins of the island’s many temples are thought to date back to the 7th century. The island was originally known as ‘Gharapuri’, but was later renamed to Elephanta after Portuguese explorers discovered a large stone Elephant near their landing place.
The temple caves here provide an exciting glimpse of Indian sculpture depicting episodes relating to Lord Shiva, each executed with power, grace and an amazing sense of movement.
