Kanchipuram, also known as the Golden City of Temples, is considered one of the seven sacred cities in India and a major center of Hindu worship. It was the Kingdoms of the
Pallavas, Cholas and Rajas of Vijaynagar. Kanchipuram is a spectacular temple city and its many gopurams can be seen for miles.
Of the original 1000 temples, there are still about 125 left spread out across the city. Many of them are the work of the late Cholas and of the Vijaynagar kings. Kanchipuram is famous for its hand-woven silk fabrics. All over the city, the clacking of looms can be heard as weavers work in pairs creating these silken masterpieces.
