Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

Climb the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The climb to the peak will take approximately 1 hour; the descent will take approximately 45 minutes. It is recommended that you wear light/cool clothing and carry a bottle of water, sunscreen, a hat and a camera.

Sigiriya is an ancient rock Fortress, surrounded by gardens, moats, and other structures. There are approximately 1200 steps, some are steep, spiral and a combination of rock and metal steps. It is a moderate hike and while climbing, there are places you can stop to catch your breath.

Some theories affirm that Sigiriya was a Mahayana Buddhist monastery or that it was both a citadel and hermitage at different times. The Citadel is a fine example of ancient Sri Lankan architecture.

The Rock was the Fortress of the "King Kassyapa" who murdered his father and stole the throne from his elder brother who was the rightful heir to the throne.
