A major highlight for me on my recent Japan journey was a Maiko Geisha Dance Performance in the Gion District of Kyoto. This fascinating cultural experience should not be missed.
From early childhood, geisha dedicate themselves to acquiring skills in singing old songs to the accompaniment of shamisen (a Japanese string instrument), performing traditional Japanese dances, and mastering various other performing arts including the fine art of conversation. Before coming of age as a geisha, maiko (young apprentice geisha) are summoned to a banquet to perform various functions – announcing the start of a performance, animating the mood of the gathering, or calming things down, if need be.
